Facts about Hound Dogs

Hound dogs are the most favorite dogs for the hunters who take their hound dogs for chasing the animal and for identifying the location of hunted animal. Sighthounds and scenthounds are the most common types of hound dogs, which have several breeds. Sighthounds follow the prey with fast speeds and catch the prey with the help of their sight, whereas scenthounds catch the prey by tracking the scent of the hunted animals.





There are hundreds of types and breeds of hound dogs such as African, Afghan, Bloodhound, Bavarian Mountain, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Latvian Hound, Polish Hound, Serbian Tri-color hound, American Foxhound, Welsh Hound, and Scottish Hound, to name the few. Hound dogs are well known for their extraordinary scenting abilities, great speed, acute sight, loyalty to the masters and superb intelligence. Hound dogs are much different from gun dogs, which are also hunting dogs. Depending upon the breed and type, hound dogs display different physical characteristics and behavior; however, the common trait is the hunting ability. Many hound dogs such as bloodhounds, and swifthounds are used by the law enforcement agencies in identifying missing persons, tracking criminals and fugitives and many other duties.
